You never know who you will meet or the stories you will hear during our Healing Field event. Yesterday a simple “How are you?” stopped us in our tracks. A young man stepped out of his car and told us that his daughter had been murdered and he was there today to get a flag.
What do you say to that? What are the right words?
So we stumbled over our words and we explained that he could pull up a flag and take a pinwheel. He told us his 2 year old daughter had been killed while he was in Afghanistan by the mother’s boyfriend. When we asked if he would like to plant the pinwheel his wife suggested that his son be the one to do it. Out of car pops this sweet, lively little boy who wanted to pull all the flags off the field. Here he is planting the pinwheel. (Picture courtesy of his grandparents.)
It was clear that the pain for this family was still very real even though the incident happened a year ago.
We would like to think that our “Healing Field” helped to heal their hearts a little. What we do know is that we continue our fight to prevent child abuse for this little angel and for all the little angels who have died from abuse. We would encourage you to share this story and as April draws near to wear a blue ribbon for child abuse prevention and awareness.
It is Tuesday and we have several more days of our Healing Field left. We still have many more flags on the field than we do pinwheels. The weather has not been our friend this year so if you or someone you know would like to make a donation but cannot come to the field please go to our donation page on the website.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us. Thank you to this family who shared their pain and their story with us. We do what we do for all the little angels.
